Gift-in-kind receipts

Use a gift-in-kind receipt when the donor gave an item, not money. It needs a signed-in account and costs 2 credits, or it is covered by a pass. See Gift types.

Steps

  1. On Create a receipt, sign in.
  2. Under Gift Information, choose Gift-in-Kind (Non-cash item). A Gift-in-Kind Details box appears.
  3. Enter the Gift Amount ($). Fair Market Value ($) fills itself in with the same amount and is locked. The form notes that for in-kind donations the fair market value equals the gift amount.
  4. Under How was this value determined?, choose one:
    • Invoice/Receipt
    • Professional Appraisal
    • Published Listing
    • Other (requires documentation)
  5. In Description of Item, describe the item. It must be at least 5 characters and no more than 50, because of the receipt layout.
  6. If you chose Professional Appraisal, enter Appraiser's name and address *. It is required, up to 150 characters, for example the appraiser's name and street address.
  7. Fill in the rest of the form as usual, then preview and generate.

If you pick Other, the form reminds you to give a detailed description of how the fair market value was determined.

What the receipt shows

The receipt prints the gift as Eligible amount, plus extra rows: FMV, Valuation (the choice you made) and Item (your description). For a gift valued by professional appraisal it also prints Appraiser with the name and address you entered. The fair market value is the value of the item on the date it was donated.

What FreeCharityReceipts does not do

It doesn't collect or keep the invoice, appraisal or listing. The valuation choice is only printed on the receipt. Keep your supporting documents yourself.

If something goes wrong

  • Gift-in-Kind receipts require authentication and credits: sign in and buy credits, or use a pass.
  • In-kind gifts require Fair Market Value, valuation method, and item description: fill in the missing field.
  • Item description must be at least 5 characters: write a longer description.
  • Enter the appraiser's name and address. It is required for a gift valued by professional appraisal.: fill in Appraiser's name and address, or choose a different valuation if the gift was not appraised.

For the CRA rules on fair market value, appraisals and what cannot be receipted, see Non-cash gifts.
